1. Finish up your graphic organizer comparing and contrasting Sumerian and American culture.  Make sure you support all of your claims with evidence -- from Gilgamesh, from your personal life, from the modern media, etc...

2. Read the selection I gave you from the end of Beowulf (when the elderly Beowulf slays a dragon).  As you read, please:
  • keep a running list of plot points.  Please don't do this afterwards... you'll forget what happened.  Make the list as you read.
  • Comment on the text.  Highlight or otherwise draw SPECIAL attention to epic conventions, qualities of epic heroes, the "mourning vocabulary" (elegy, dirge, etc) that we discussed, similarities with Gilgamesh, etc.
  • If you don't understand something, mark it with a question mark ( ?).  Then, reread that section slowly.  If you still don't understand, CIRCLE the question mark.
